Led nationally by the Partnership for Public Service, PSRW honors the millions of individuals who serve our nation as federal, state, county, local, and tribal government employees.

Each year, during the first week of May, communities across the country come together to celebrate Public Service Recognition Week (PSRW). Led nationally by the Partnership for Public Service, PSRW honors the millions of individuals who serve our nation as federal, state, county, local, and tribal government employees. At the University of Colorado Denver School of Public Affairs (SPA), this week is an opportunity to recognize the dedication, professionalism, and resilience that define public service and to reaffirm our shared commitment to serving the public good.
Why Public Service Recognition Week Matters
Public servants are the backbone of our democracy. They design and deliver programs, respond to emergencies, manage public resources, and ensure that institutions function effectively for the people they serve. Public Service Recognition Week shines a light on this essential work and the individuals behind it, many of whom serve quietly and without public notice.
This year, PSRW comes at a particularly challenging moment for the public sector. Federal civil servants are navigating a dramatically changed landscape marked by mass layoffs, agency closures, program terminations, and increased attacks on the value and integrity of the nonpartisan civil service. At the same time, state and local governments are working to meet growing community needs while facing shrinking resources and persistent funding gaps.
Despite these challenges, public servants continue to persevere. They adapt, innovate, and deliver critical services for communities across the country. PSRW is a moment to step back, reflect, and publicly acknowledge the importance of their work and the impact it has on all of our lives.
Honoring Public Service at SPA
Public service is at the heart of the School of Public Affairs. Our students, faculty, staff, and alumni are deeply engaged in government, nonprofit, and public sector leadership roles that strengthen communities locally, nationally, and globally. Many of our alumni serve on the front lines of public service, addressing complex challenges in public administration, public policy, and criminal justice.
During Public Service Recognition Week, SPA proudly joins the Partnership for Public Service and institutions across the nation in celebrating those who have chosen careers dedicated to the public interest. We recognize not only the impact of public servants, but also the courage and commitment it takes to continue this work during times of uncertainty.
Across the country, mayors, governors, agency leaders, and public service organizations mark PSRW by issuing proclamations, hosting award ceremonies, highlighting stories of excellence, and finding meaningful ways to say thank you. These efforts remind public servants that their work is seen, valued, and appreciated.
