The new Center for Community Safety and Resilience (CCSR), housed at the School of Public Affairs at CU Denver, hosted an event to disseminate the findings of a recently produced report on crime rates in Colorado from 2010 to 2021. The report co-authors are School of Public Affairs faculty Professor and CU Regent Callie Rennison and Dr. Sheila Huss, clinical assistant professor and interim co-director of the CCSR.

Youth violence has been on the rise in Denver, and with the help of Dr. Sheila Huss, the City of Denver is on the case. Dr. Sheila Huss is an assistant professor of criminal justice, clinical teaching track, at the CU Denver School of Public Affairs, and she also serves as the program director for the school’s Bachelor of Arts in Criminal Justice. Since early 2020, she has been performing a needs assessment around youth violence prevention efforts in Denver as part of the Youth Violence Prevention Action Table (YVPAT).

The board provided an overview of the parole system, their responsibilities as parole board members and the type of experience that is essential for serving on the board. Roughly 80 people from CU Denver and the surrounding community attended the Criminal Justice Series Event, “Technology in the Criminal Justice System,” on September 30, 2019. The Criminal Justice Program, hosted by CU Denver School of Public Affairs, featured three panelists in the event: Andrew J. Contiguglia, a defense attorney with decades of experience in state and federal courts; Michelle Means, a federal probation officer for the District of Colorado; and Paul Taylor, an Assistant Professor at the CU Denver School of Public Affairs and former law enforcement officer. The panelists discussed how technology has changed over the years and the impact of these changes.
