A Legacy of Leadership, Compassion, and Academic Excellence

The School of Public Affairs bids a heartfelt farewell to Dawn Savage, Advisor and Academic Services Manager, as she retires in January 2026 after more than 30 years of dedicated service at CU Denver, most of them right here at SPA.
Dawn started her career at CU Denver in January 1996, first in the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Academic & Student Affairs and then spent nearly three decades at SPA.
She has been a cornerstone of SPA’s student advising success team, guiding countless students through their academic journeys with expertise, compassion, and unwavering commitment. Her leadership in academic services—especially in supporting faculty and implementing program advancements—has shaped the student experience and strengthened the school’s reputation for excellence.
“Dawn has been the anchor of the advising team,” said Nora Scanlon, MCJ, MPA, Lead Academic Advisor & Programs Coordinator. “She’s the person we turn to for perspective, problem-solving, history, and guidance. She has trained new advisors, mentored seasoned ones, and modeled a standard of responsiveness and compassion that has become our norm. Through her dedication, she helped create a cohesive, supportive team that values communication, collegiality, and student-centered service. In many ways, she built the foundation we now stand on.”
“Dawn was one of the first people I met during my MPA and is truly one of the warmest people I know,” said Deserai Anderson, PhD, Professor, Program Director, Doctor of Philosophy in Public Affairs, and Co-Director, Center for Community Safety and Resilience. “Fast forward 25 years and Dawn is absolutely part of the fabric of SPA. Every student who comes through our doors knows her. As a professor now, Dawn is a positive, deeply knowledgeable, and caring colleague. It will be impossible to replace her, and we will miss her profoundly. She has made SPA a better place for our students, faculty, staff, and alumni in countless ways.”
“Dawn has been a steady presence throughout my time at SPA, from my Master of Public Administration (MPA) into my PhD,” said Katie Imhoff, current PhD student and Director of Development for SPA. “As I navigated shifting academic demands and decision points, she consistently met each step with kindness, clarity, and care. Her calm, thoughtful advising has made a real difference in my experience as a student.”
“I will miss Dawn’s presence,” continued Nora Scanlon. “Her calm reassurance, her willingness to help at a moment’s notice, and her sense of humor that could lighten even the most stressful days. I’ll miss being able to walk into her office to ask a quick question and leave feeling grounded, supported, and more confident. She leaves a void that can’t be filled, not because of her role, but because of who she is.”

With lifelong ties to Colorado, Dawn graduated from Denver Public Schools and earned her undergraduate degree at Metropolitan State University of Denver. Her deep roots in the community reflect her enduring commitment to education and service. Beyond her professional achievements, Dawn completed the Colorado Master Gardener program through Jefferson County and CSU Extension, showcasing her passion for learning and growth—both in and out of the classroom.
“Dawn’s dedication to our students and her commitment to academic excellence have been truly exceptional,” said Chris Weible, Interim Dean and Distinguished Professor of the School of Public Affairs. “For nearly three decades, she has been a trusted guide and advocate, helping graduate students navigate their academic journeys with care and expertise. Her impact on the School of Public Affairs is immeasurable, and while we will miss her greatly, we celebrate the legacy she leaves behind.”
As Dawn embarks on this new chapter, we celebrate her remarkable contributions and wish her joy and fulfillment in retirement. Her legacy will continue to inspire students, faculty, and staff for years to come.
Celebrating Dawn’s Legacy Through Scholarships
As Dawn retires after nearly three decades of service, she shares a heartfelt request:
“As a first-generation student, scholarships made it possible for me to stay in school and earn my degree. They changed the trajectory of my life. For that reason, I’ve tried to give back by donating monthly to SPA scholarships.
As I retire, I would be honored if faculty, staff, and alumni chose to support SPA scholarships in place of a traditional retirement gift. Helping future students would mean more to me than anything else. Thank you for the privilege of sharing these past thirty years with you.”
To celebrate Dawn’s incredible career and continue her commitment to student success, we invite you to make a gift to the SPA Scholarship Fund in her name. Your support will help future students achieve their dreams, just as scholarships once helped Dawn.
