Much of the public discussion of women in government leadership has centered around elected officials, both nationally and in Colorado. In this First Friday Breakfast we’ll turn our attention to women who have been leading within government agencies.

At the state level, 12 of Governor Polis’ 20 cabinet positions are currently held by women, as are several deputy director and agency executive team positions. In local government, Colorado Women Leading Government is one of 18 state chapters of the national group dedicated to helping more women enter and succeed in local government management. And, the federal government reports an increase in senior executives who are women. With all of this still comes challenges and barriers to success for women in the public sector.

We’ll hear from University of Colorado Denver School of Public Affairs faculty member, Dr. Sebawit Bishu about her research on women in government management and talk with four Colorado leaders about their journey, what they see for the future of women in government, and hear how they have been supported and worked to support others in their government careers.

Panelists:

Jennifer Hoffman
City Manager, City and County of Broomfield

Angela Belden Martinez
Regional Director, U.S. Economic Development Administration – Denver Office

Dionne Williams
Executive Director, Office of Children’s Affairs, City and County of Denver

Moderator:

Sebawit Bishu
Assistant Professor, University of Colorado Denver School of Public Affairs
