Criminal Justice Series: Corrections in Colorado

| 05:00 PM - 07:00 PM
Room Number : Terrace Room (2nd Floor)
Lawrence Street Center
1380 Lawrence Street
Denver, CO

Corrections in the criminal justice system encompass a number of punitive, treatment and supervisory tasks typically carried out by the government. Directed at individuals who have been convicted of crime, corrections includes the death penalty, jails and prisons, probation and parole, and other forms of community sanctions. Currently, there are some reforms under consideration in the Colorado Legislature, including the elimination of cash bail, repealing the death penalty, and providing electronic reminders to probationers to appear at upcoming proceedings. This panel will look at different aspects of corrections in Colorado and will include participants with experience in institutional and community corrections, as well as an insider’s perspective from a man who was exonerated after spending many years on death row.

Panelists:

  • Alicia Givens, Senior Probation Officer, Denver County Court Probation, City and County of Denver
  • Juan Roberto Melendez-Colon, Florida Death Row Exoneree Armando Saldate III, Performance Improvement Manager, Department of Public Safety, City and County of Denver
  • Glenn Tapia, Director of Probation Services, Colorado Division of Probation Services
  • Alexandra Walker, Director, Community Relations and Strategy, Alliance for Criminal Justice Innovation (ACJI)

Moderator:

  •  Lori Hughes, Associate Professor, School of Public Affairs, CU Denver

There will be a short reception beginning at 5:00 p.m. Programming will run from 5:30-7:00 p.m.
